Hvaldimir. Over the years, we developed what felt

Hvaldimir. Over the years, we developed what felt like a friendship. Anytime I jumped in, he would be very excited to interact for hours. I chose never to share the underwater interactions to avoid drawing crowds to interact with him in the water. A select few were invited to help document the story, including WWF ambassador @conormcdphoto , whose work resulted in a front-page feature in The New York Times Magazine, and ocean advocate @aleksandernordahl .

The encounters have also been documented in VR and shared with countless school classes across the Nordic countries, sparking much enthusiasm.
This particular encounter was masterfully captured by our friend Håvard Hanasand in Stavanger one winter ago. There is ongoing work to keep his memory alive through a museum exhibition intended to travel the world, with @marinemind_org and Sebastian Strand as key contributors. The footage captured on this day will be featured on the BBC this coming Wednesday in the documentary Secrets of a Spy Whale. Much more footage will be released over time, when the time is right.

Hvaldimir, the Beluga whale, passed away this Satu

Hvaldimir, the Beluga whale, passed away this Saturday just outside our home port of Stavanger. We had the pleasure of meeting this extraordinary creature on multiple occasions since our first encounter in Finnmark in 2019. It feels like we have lost a dear friend, and the ocean has been deprived of a remarkable creature. Our thoughts go first and foremost to the extraordinary @marinemind_org team, led by Sebastiane Strand, who were closely following this whale with the best of intentions— to care for him. Although a lonely whale, Hvaldimir was never alone and was loved by many. Wherever he went, he drew a crowd, engaging children and adults alike. Looking out at the ocean now, it feels a bit emptier, and we know that in our lifetime, we will never come close to experiencing a similar fairytale as that of the Beluga whale, Hvaldimir. Despite his passing, his legacy will live on, and he will continue to inspire love for the ocean.
We only wish he could have stayed with us longer ❤️

She played an instrumental role as co-mission lead for the Arctic Whale project back in 2019, and has left a lasting legacy for the Barba project. She has since moved to Bergen, and has commenced a family project of her own 😀👏👏👏Archivcal footage from 2019 bringing back found memories.
