Hvaldimir, the Beluga whale, passed away this Satu

Hvaldimir, the Beluga whale, passed away this Saturday just outside our home port of Stavanger. We had the pleasure of meeting this extraordinary creature on multiple occasions since our first encounter in Finnmark in 2019. It feels like we have lost a dear friend, and the ocean has been deprived of a remarkable creature. Our thoughts go first and foremost to the extraordinary @marinemind_org team, led by Sebastiane Strand, who were closely following this whale with the best of intentions— to care for him. Although a lonely whale, Hvaldimir was never alone and was loved by many. Wherever he went, he drew a crowd, engaging children and adults alike. Looking out at the ocean now, it feels a bit emptier, and we know that in our lifetime, we will never come close to experiencing a similar fairytale as that of the Beluga whale, Hvaldimir. Despite his passing, his legacy will live on, and he will continue to inspire love for the ocean.
We only wish he could have stayed with us longer ❤️

Repost from @nytmag - Meet Hvaldimir. Yes he is a beluga whale, and yes he has a name. Hvaldimir escaped captivity and became a global celebrity. Now, no one can agree about what to do with him.

In the years since Hvaldimir first entered the global spotlight, the very qualities that make him so endearing — his intelligence, curiosity and charisma — have put him in perpetual danger. While traveling along the coasts of Norway and Sweden, he has inadvertently hooked himself on fishing lines and suffered multiple gashes caused by boat strikes. Incessant chewing of ropes and chains has worn his teeth to nubs. Overzealous spectators have swarmed him for photos, prodded him with brooms and thrown rocks in his vicinity to draw his attention. Some Norwegians have threatened to seek warrants to shoot and kill the beluga because he has damaged salmon farms or other underwater structures.

Hvaldimir is now at the center of a dispute over his welfare.
